Yanagawa Saves His Best 'Til Last

Last night Yohei Yanagawa graced the mound for the Bandits for the last time this season. This has nothing to do with injury or performance - He's returning to Japan for some much needed rest. While the Bandits will undoubtedly miss his presence each week (it leaves a big hole in the pitching rotation), he definitely saved his best until last.

Last night Yohei pitched  7 innings, his longest appearance in the ABL to date, striking-out 9 and walking none. While impressive strikeout numbers have been standard for him this season, he has shown a tendency to walk batters - Thus, the fact he walked nobody last night is just as impressive aa the number he fanned. It was a terrific all-round performance and a great way for him to say Sayonara to the Bandits fans. I also believe his Japanese club, the Softbank Hawks, will be very pleased with his development in Australia. In the Japanese NPB league (and it's minor league system) he's played entirely as a reliever - so his impressive starting pitching in Australia, culminating in a seven innings long appearance with perfect control, is a fantastic way for him to show off his ability as a Starting Pitcher.

From his time in Australia, these are his accumulative statistics:

I use accumulative numbers as they're a good way to show progressive trends in performance. His ability to strikeout batters has been remarkably consistent - and as he gradually improved his control, his WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) statistic.

While it would have been nice to see Yohei have a few more starts - and observed if the trends held true - I think his time in Australia has been time well spent. It's sad to see him go, and the Bandits will miss his performances, but I'm sure all Bandits fans wish him the best of luck for the future. I'll be following his career in the NPB league for sure.
